Trans Activists And Drag Queens Agree: Logo’s “She-Mail” Ban Went Too Far

$

rupaul-drag-raceLogo TV announced this week that it would pull the iconic “You’ve Got She-Mail” phrase from further episodes of RuPaul‘s Drag Race, apologizing for being “insensitive” after an Advocate blogger blasted RuPaul for using what she believed to be a “transphobic slur.”

Though the show has used the phrase to precede announcements given by RuPaul for the last six seasons, the controversy came after a recent episode repurposed the term for a challenge called “Female or She-Male.” In response to the controversy, Logo also began removing older episodes of Drag Race from their online archives.

Not everyone agrees with Logo’s decision to censor the iconic phrase. A number of former RuPaul‘s Drag Race contestants and trans activists, including Our Lady J and Andrea James, have voiced opinions in opposition to the “politically correct ideals” that fueled the campaign*.

Below, some of the most notable Drag Race alums sound off on the topic at hand:

PhiPhiOhara_white1-resize-2-585x819“In my opinion this is so ridiculous! What upsets me even more is the fact that some of the contestants that are complaining about it didn’t have a problem being on the show or getting their fame and success knowing this was part of show. Never was this intended to offend anyone or upset anyone. I love the transgender community soooooo much but I have to say “SheMail” had nothing to do with you until some of the transgender community made it about themselves. I understand how as a community some feel this brings the community and the view of gender identity harder to accept but in all reality you are what you answer to. If you feel the word does not represent who you are then it shouldn’t bother you to begin with.

The show has created such a place for the LGBT community in this world. It has made it ok for us to be who we are and has shown the world we are not freaks and we deserve love just like anyone else in this world. The show has not only had transgender guests but many prior contestants that are transgender and have done nothing but given them love, support, respect and catapulted their career plus given them a voice that may otherwise have been silent or not as loud had it not been for a show that gave them support. This subject saddens me because it is our community that has decided this word describes who we are and considers it a negative.

I support the transgender community and have so many close friends that I love dearly. I want a world that accepts everyone for who they are and who they are meant to be.” — Phi Phi O’HaraRuPaul‘s Drag Race season 4

rpdr-allstars-pandora-personality-cutRuPaul‘s Drag Race is the first EVER show to feature an entire cast of drag queens. It has made us question gender rules dictated to us by our society. To me that is part of what drag is all about, breaking down those gender rules. When transgender contestants have opened up about who they are they were greeted with open arms. Yet, somehow this show is the enemy we should be fighting for to gain equality.

I do want to say, I love and respect all of my transgender friends and community. I always have and always will.

I was never offended nor were any of the contestants (who were fighting for screen time to get their face on TV) by the phrase “You’ve Got She-mail.” We all just saw it as a take off of America’s Next Top Model and then we all pretend to be “shes” for a living. This phrase has also been on the show for 5.5 seasons.

I certainly never want to see someone belittled and legitimately hurt by anything. In my opinion this was not hate speech. To me this just isn’t the battle that needed to be fought. This has the potential to open flood gates we may not want open. Trust me the list of offensive words is growing exponentially. I just don’t see this as a victory for transgender rights. We all already believed you should have them.

I certainly understand that words can indeed cause pain. I’ve dealt with that all my life. But then I realized that I am giving these words power over me. I refuse to be defined by words and I refuse to let words bring me down.” — Pandora BoxxRuPaul‘s Drag Race season 2

0166RuPaul‘s politically correct drag race. The term she-mail never offended me. People w/ a lack of sense of humor does. — Sonique, transgender contestant on RuPaul‘s Drag Race season 2

manila“Because I am offended by it, RuPaul‘s Drag Race will ALSO edit out the last episode of season 3 where Raja Gemini kicks my ass and wins the crown!

And because EVERYONE was offended, the entire season of RuPaul‘s All Stars Drag Race will be edited off the face of the earth.” — Manila LuzonRuPaul‘s Drag Race season 3

hotseat.sharon-needles.wideaI think [any man] who wears huge wigs, exaggerated make up, skimpy outfits, giant lashes, and impossible shoes to impersonate (slander) a woman is a complete misogynist!! They should all be edited out of all and past episodes of RuPaul‘s Drag Race. — Sharon NeedlesRuPaul‘s Drag Race season 4

31efe0588bc0f50c3e70d581af26bf48“Dumb dumb and even more fucking dumb!!!! If you were ever offended by the use of ” she mail” on drag race then to be honest you probably shouldn’t have been watching the show in the first place. Fuck stop taking shit so seriously and get over it. Whomever wants to argue the point don’t even bother messaging me because I could care less!!!!” — ShannelRuPaul‘s Drag Race season 1

andersen“Apparently the punny and perky term ” You’ve got shemail” has been stricken from use on RuPaul‘s Drag Race…..VICTORY!……..albeit a hollow one. A victory, because apparently you can petition and harangue and shame using the awesome power of social media to extract an apology…..hollow, in that it is hard to exact the requisite level of authentic remorse from such methods……..nevermind, surely the result must take precedence over the method……..Kudos kids.

“we outta have one of these every year”- Chastity Pariah” — Mathu AndersenRuPaul‘s Drag Race creative producer and stylist to RuPaul

o-CARMEN-CARRERA-facebook (1)“So once again people are mad at something that doesn’t concern them. I’m making a post about this to get a couple of things straight. First of all I’m not the one to accept slurs from anyone. I’ve always been that way. In high school I watched gay kids get beat up and bullied and you know what, I remained quiet. Why? Because I was afraid to be treated the same way. Some words do hurt other people. ?I hadn’t initially commented on the “Female or Shemale” game on Drag Race when many people initially came forward and complained about it. I sat and thought about it for a whole week. I decided to make a comment on how I believed drag race was a platform for drag artists to showcase their creativity and how the show brought a lot of acceptance to drag queens mainstream. I also said that drag race should be more conscious of the words they use and shouldn’t further objectify transwomen with a game that obviously hurt a lot of the shows fans in the first place. ?Drag race has now, weeks after they already made a comment about it and after I said my peace, that they are removing that word from the show. Great. Right? ?Well now I’m dealing with a bunch of people who think it’s ok to personally attack me on social media for standing up for those who were offended and hurt by the words on the show. That ain’t even cool boo. ?I can only do so much and honestly I rather be a real person than a fake bitch who will sit and allow others to use ignorance and hatred towards me or other trans people as if it’s ok. ?This isn’t high school. We need to grow up a little. It’s real life. I think people should educate themselves on respect and maybe, just maybe will the world begin to change for the better. ?I also think that using Ru-Mail or Fe-Mail may be a better substitute… Either way, you still get your favorite show and RuPaul still gets paid ?#?amenforthat ?#?peacebewithyou” — Carmen Carrera, transgender contestant on RuPaul‘s Drag Race season 3

And, of course, RuPaul herself has weighed in:

https://twitter.com/RuPaul/status/455775142262898688

https://twitter.com/RuPaul/status/456421144879321088

Carmen Carrera, the season 3 contestant credited with sparking the original debate through a strongly worded Facebook post, seems to be riding the line. She spoke on the topic again with Damiana Garcia at the 2014 GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles last week.

“I thought that it was brilliant because it took away from the typical meaning of ‘shemale’ and made it new,” she said. Speaking of her mainstream trans activism work alongside trans actress Laverne Cox, Carrera said “I think that it’s up to us to make sure that everyone knows what words are okay and what words are not okay”:

Also speaking with Garcia last week were Calpernia Addams and Andrea James, author of the essay that established the dissenting opinion. “World of Wonder has done more for trans people than any other production company in history,” said James, “and I felt like I wanted to provide some balance to what’s going on out there…We have to keep everything in perspective.”

Perhaps referring to an Advocate blogger’s proclamation that she “fucking hates RuPaul,” Addams added that “dialogue that’s happening between calm, rational, intelligent people with an eye towards history, I think, is where change is going to come from”:

Where do you stand on the issue?

*After reading this post, Andrea James would like to clarify that she “agreed with Logo’s decision to remove the phrase and spoke directly to the producers about why.”

Sharon Needles Tries To Explain Why So Many Gay Men Worship Judy Garland

$

tumblr_n6kj8rbN8e1roefaio1_500I grew up loving The Wizard of Oz like any gay boy, but I was that different gay kid, so I was really more connected to the witch. But I know that Judy through the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s was this subculture gay icon, and I think my generation really just spawns new Judy Garlands: Barbra Streisand, Cher, Lady Gaga. I think the appeal is that they are caricatures of femininity that usually emerge from fighting adversity.

Judy was not a classical beauty, but all the faggots thought she was the most beautiful thing they’d ever seen. Barbra Streisand is ugly as sin—ugly as sin!—but every gay man think she’s beautiful. Cher looks like Chad Michaels, and we all know what Chad Michaels looks like out of drag. So again, it’s gay men identifying with unconventional beauty and fighting adversity. I think that’s where the love of Judy comes from, and I think that’s why people see beauty in me. I’m not a classic model beauty, but I think people identified with my struggle and my success story and my unconventional beauty. I am the new Judy Garland! It’s just hitting me now! That wig is not even going to fit on how big this head is gonna get.

Club promoter Brandon Voss put together a spooky evening with a crew of RuPaul‘s Drag Race favorites to get New Yorkers in the Halloween spirit. Ivy Winters, Courtney Act, Milk, Darienne Lake, and Alaska joined a team of local gurls and ghouls for a special one night only event in a massive 5,000 square foot Haunted Manor with gory themed rooms, corridors, and a labyrinth of passageways. Sharon Needles hosted and evening and cackled as guests entered and welcomed them to her haunted house.  The Haunted Manor was the finale to a weekend of events Scream Queen Sharon Needles hosted in New York City. Screams shifted to laughter and more mayhem as DJ Honey Dijon and Dirty Martini flipped the crowd afterwards at Up & Down Sundays.

On tonight’s extra special episode of RuPaul‘s Drag Race (which aired right before they announced the cast of the show’s seventh season), Logo revealed the 15 fan favorite queens of all time!

The queens were selected in a series of fan votes, which were conducted starting in late September. Fans were given six days to vote for their favorite queens from each season, in which one season was released for voting each day.

We’ve been requested to share these top 15 queens by the group of our readers who were unable to watch the episode for one reason or another. The sad part is, if you missed this episode, you didn’t get the opportunity to see us, Dragaholic, featured during the (SPOILER ALERT) Raja segment of the half-hour show!

This was OUR MOMENT and we waited 9 months for this to happen! *Cue tears* (Sadly, it only lasted for about one second before it disappeared, ha!)

Here’s the article they showed…

EXCLUSIVE: Sharon Needles Releases Sexy RuPaul Tribute Remix "Supermodel Inc."

New York dance-music lynchpin Larry Tee has teamed up with RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 winner, artist and self-confessed ‘stupid genius’ Sharon NeedlesAs a tribute to RuPaul, Sharon sings ‘Supermodel Inc,’ which discusses the ugly side of the modelling business.

Sharon Needles RuPaul's Drag Race Fierce Look 004-1Exclusively remixed by emerging DJ and Presenter Will Bond, this track oozes with deep basslines and throbbing house. ‘Supermodel Inc.’ is one of many future club anthems packed into Larry Tee’s latest album project, ‘Super Electric Party Machine’.

“Larry Tee is a history book of nightlife insanity,” Sharon added, “He makes stupid music smart, or is it the other way around?!”

Herstory lesson: Larry Tee wrote the original ‘Supermodel’ with RuPaul, which was originally released in 1993.

The album features a weird and wonderful cast of producers, DJs, artists, performers, MCs and club-land characters. Larry Tee, Mike Q, Andrey Bartenev, Roxy Cottontail, Princess Superstar, Nwando, Sharon Needles, Cunty Savage, Lady Cartel, QBoy and singer-cum-cover girl Portia Ferrari make up this colourful, creative gang of esoteric characters, who go against the grain and do things their way.

Sharon Needles RuPaul's Drag Race Season 4 winner Supermodel Inc Instagram PhotoNot for the faint-hearted and definitely not for the boring, ‘Super Electric Party Machine’ is an eleven track attitude-packed riot of ghetto bass, badass booty, throbbing house and ballroom, packed with future club anthems that scream mainstream crossover.

This album was the brainchild of hotly tipped-new London producer/remixer AttackAttackAttack and New York dance-music lynchpin Larry Tee, who having run London’s most newsworthy parties, now look set to become one of hottest new production duos. Despite being very young, AttackAttackAttack has already added his expert touch to remixes and productions for Sia, Iggy Azalia, Steve Aoki and REM.

Expect 2015 to be the year that ‘Super Electric Party Machine’ puts London talent at the centre of the international entertainment map.

We honestly already knew that, but seeing her savage the Season 7 sisters was a constant delight.

5. Pearl spells it “flazéda.”

She also thinks that the accent above the e is called a hyphen.

6. There apparently wasn’t much of a budget for the “Born Naked” music video.clipshow 06

Did anyone else literally forget that she existed until they showed a clip of her?

That’s not a surprise by itself, but I was shocked that there weren’t other reasons for including her in the Top 3.

10. This season actually wasn’t that boring.

The Many Faces Of “Rocky Horror’s” Dr. Frank-N-Furter, From Tim Curry To Laverne Cox

cox-laverne-rocky-horror
This week, we got our first look at Laverne Cox’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Fox’s upcoming live musical remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. Cox says her version of the character, originated by Tim Currry—who appears in the reboot as the film’s Narrator—has been compared to Grace Jones and David Bowie. “It’s way more elaborate and couture,” she tells Entertainment Weekly. “[Director] Kenny Ortega had this vision that Frank was at this old theater and found these old burlesque costumes and is, like, using them and wearing them now but has altered them a bit.”

Here’s the full photo:

It’s certainly a departure from the cult classic, immortalized by Tim Curry:

tim-curry-rocky-horror

The Orange Is the New Black star isn’t the first performer to reinterpret this sweet transvestite. Let’s do the “Time Warp” again and have a look back at the many faces of Dr. Frank-N-Furter:

Amber Riley

Casting Glee‘s aspiring soul diva Mercedes in Curry’s role in the show’s very special Rocky Horror episode was a little unexpected—but definitely not as unlikely as a high school production of the risqué musical.

Jim Parsons

7087b26b6ae256db3d5d38cac12c38d1In 2013, Parsons slipped into the requisite fishnets to play Frank-N-Furter alongside his Big Bang Theory co-stars in at A Night at Sardi’s benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association.

Anthony Head

Anthony Head
Probably best known as tweedy librarian Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Head was altogether less buttoned-up when he starred in the West End’s 1990-1991 revival of The Rocky Horror Show.

Tom Hewitt

livingrockyhorror2_t440 (1)This Broadway star dispensed with the wig when he starred in the 2000 revival alongside Joan Jett and Daphne Rubin Vega.

The Divas of Drag Race

10696434_961506520529759_6750191153447619843_n (1)It’s pretty much become a tradition for RuPaul’s Drag Race alums and regulars alike to appear in San Antonio’s Woodlawn Theater’s annual staging of Rocky Horror. Everyone from Michelle Visage to Bianca Del Rio has done the “Time Warp” on the Lone Star stage. Alaska, Sharon Needles, and Courtney Act have all brought their own radically different interpretations to the character of Frank-N-Furter.

Roseanne Barr Is Totally On Board With Getting The Drag Queen Treatment

$

Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 3.26.25 PM

Roseanne Barr’s character in the 1989 cult classic She Devil might as well be a drag queen herself, what with the hideous-chic outfits, the frazzled hair and the mole. That mole!

So is Meryl Streep’s character for that matter, making the film a perfect choice for San Francisco drag queen Peaches Christ’s wonderfully raucous live stage adaptations.

And the comedy potential is not lost on Roseanne herself.

Peaches did the courtesy of inviting Roseanne to the July 9th show, which costars Sharon Needles and Heklina — very ladylike indeed:

b75ae4fe-1a2e-4fab-bcad-88f5f050efca

Roseanne, not known for being a woman of few words, had just one in response — “awesome” :

12624f38-0bc3-4ce7-af2f-cdda5620c9c7

Only time will tell if she’ll make an appearance to witness the mayhem.

If you haven’t been to one of Peaches’ shows at the iconic Castro Theater, it’s a hoot and a half.

You can find more info here.

We’ll leave you with this fine bit of acting from the film — the dinner disaster. This movie really was made for drag:
